In Ghana, basketball is not so popular even though it is very entertaining and lucrative like football which is a well known sport. This therefore puts basketball in the category of less known sports in the country. Nevertheless, an appreciable number of the youth love the game so much that right from the Junior High Schools, students play basketball and even when they are home on vacations you will find them on basketball courts in their neighbourhood. Others also move from one area to another just to play the basketball. Even though the youth have fallen in love with basketball, organizations in the country as well as governments (that have come and gone) have not done much to promote the sport.

The game of Basketball is growing popular as it’s so easy to follow and understand. It is a very entertaining game which can be played by all. Basketball brings out the skill in players as it allows them to express themselves. Like other sports, it is a game of passion and enthusiasm. The interest of Ghanaians to play and watch the game is gradually growing with a lot of talents out there to be unearthed in the youth who follow the game and have the potential to become basketball stars given the opportunity and platform like their friends who play football.

It is in this light that Oasis Generation Ltd. has put together this tournament to provide the platform for these basketball talents to be discovered and developed to provide jobs for the players, make available to the nation more talents to scout from for the national basketball team and also provide alternative source of entertainment for Ghanaians. The economic benefits of the game will also be fully tapped through this tournament.

To successfully do this, Oasis Generation has structured a Basketball tournament to help promote the game in the country.

We believe that this tournament presents great business opportunities for corporate bodies. In view of this we have structured the tournament such that its business opportunities will be fully exploited

How?

The venue for the game is the University of Ghana Basketball Court – Legon, Accra. The selection of this court is due to the fact that it is very popular among the youth and easy to locate. Access to transportation to and from Legon is very convenient.

The game will be played on a half court. To participate in this tournament, interested players must form a team of four (4) players with three (3) playing at any given time and one (1) player as substitute plus one (1) manager. The team shall then pick up a form at any of the designated points to fill out and submit on the first day of the tournament (at the venue) to enable them participate.

All registered teams shall be paired against each other (by balloting) to play in qualification games which will take the form of a knock out. Winners will be paired again to further compete with each other. This will be done until eight (8) teams are left. These teams will then be put into two (2) groups with four (4) teams in each group for the tournament.

Each game will be played within fifteen (15) minutes with three (3) halves for the qualification stage. There shall be 5 minutes in each half and one (1) minute break. Baskets (goals) made will be used to determine the winner. In the case of a tie, free throws (thus taking a shot from a demarcated point on the court) shall be used to determine a winner.

Each game during the tournament shall be played within the same fifteen (15) minutes with three (3) halves and five (5) minutes in each half. There shall be two (2) minutes half time.
